Messier 51

🇺🇸 M51 (NGC 5194 or Tourbillon galaxy) is a relatively close spiral galaxy located in the constellation of Hunting Dogs about 27 million light-years from the Milky Way.

Together with NGC 5195, sometimes referred to as M51B, M51 forms a couple of interacting galaxies. It is believed that the well-defined spiral structure of the Tourbillon galaxy comes from the close interaction between it and the neighboring galaxy NGC 5195. The latter could have crossed the M51 disk about 500 to 600 million years ago. Under the proposed scenario, NGC 5195 would have penetrated the M51 disk from the rear towards us and it would even have made another crossing between 50 and 100 million years to its present position, slightly at the rear of M51.

En compagnie de NGC 5195, quelquefois désigné comme M51B, M51 forme un couple de galaxies en interaction.
On pense que la structure spirale bien définie de la galaxie du Tourbillon provient de l'interaction étroite entre elle et la galaxie voisine NGC 5195. Cette dernière pourrait avoir traversé le disque de M51 il y a environ 500 à 600 millions d'années. Selon le scénario proposé, NGC 5195 aurait pénétré le disque de M51 de l'arrière vers nous et elle aurait même effectué un autre croisement entre 50 et 100 millions d'années jusqu'à sa position présente, soit légèrement à l'arrière de M51.
